Our Challenge

The primary challenge of award winning Peninsular House lay in seamlessly integrating the existing 1980s structure with a highly complex new addition, both aesthetically and structurally. This required the careful coordination of multiple structural systems—timber, masonry, concrete, and steel—often intersecting within the same zones, where new and existing elements needed to align precisely while carrying differing loads. Achieving consistent levels, clean transitions, and a cohesive architectural expression demanded an exceptional degree of accuracy in setout and execution, all while navigating external pressures including COVID-19 restrictions and prolonged adverse weather conditions.

Our Solution

Peninsular House is an award winning unique family home defined by innovative spaces, light and a sense of play. An existing 1980s residence was extensively renovated and expanded in all directions, complemented by a cohesive landscape and pool design. The project required the careful integration of new and existing elements across a complex mix of timber, masonry, concrete and steel, demanding precision in execution and coordination throughout.

Despite the added pressures of COVID-19 restrictions and persistent La Niña weather, the team maintained progress through disciplined site management, staged construction and strong trade coordination. Significant attention was given to resolving both structural and aesthetic transitions, with large voids and intricate detailing requiring extensive setout and in-situ refinement.

A standout feature is the rear living space, where a steeply pitched roof forms a striking external profile and a cathedral ceiling within. Subtle adjustments to account for bulkheads and varying wall thicknesses ensured the space feels perfectly balanced, both internally and externally.

The home celebrates a strong connection between inside and out. An off-form concrete sculptural link connects the main façade to a semi-covered outdoor area, flowing through to the pool and landscaped surrounds. Internally, double-height voids, vaulted ceilings and skylight shafts introduce light, ventilation and spatial relief to the deep floor plan.

The result is a refined and dynamic home, thoughtfully resolved and designed for a large family to enjoy for years to come.
